Velemir Ivic (born on August 16, 1936 in Belgrade) was a Serbian linguist and philologist who specialized in the fields of sociolinguistics, language planning, and orthography. He was associated with the University of Belgrade for nearly 40 years, serving as a professor of Serbian language and Slavic studies. He was also a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Ivic authored over 300 scholarly works, including books, articles, and essays, which have been recognized and celebrated by professional organizations for his significant contributions to the field of linguistics. He also served as an expert advisor to various governments on matters of language policy and planning, and was a prominent advocate of defending minority languages and multiculturalism. Velemir Ivic passed away on December 23, 2004, in Belgrade.
